American lawmakers have admitted that a deal has been signed with Kurdish rebels for access to the oil. And who can forget President Donald Trump's decision to pull US troops out of Syria last October, apart from the contingent which was ostensibly left to protect the region's oilfields from Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS) terrorists in areas of north Syria controlled by the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces. Trump put it more bluntly when he boasted 'I kept the oil.'
Syria's Foreign Ministry has now condemned a deal between an unnamed American oil firm and the Kurds, calling the oil extraction 'stealing' and the rebels 'a cheap puppet in the hands of the American occupation.' The ministry added that it would consider the deal 'null and void.'
